As defined by co-developer, John Grinder, Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is the science of personal excellence. NLP can be considered an art because everyone brings their unique personality and style ·to what they do, and this can never be fully captured in words or techniques. It can also be considered a science because there is a method and process for discovering the patterns used by outstanding individuals (in any field) to achieve specific results. NLP is a model of how individuals structure their unique experiences of life. It is the study of subjective reality.
NLP can be very useful in understanding how a person will sort, store and retrieve their internal Representations (IR) (the content sourcing a person's realities and associated behaviors). By definition NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a name that encompasses the three most influential components involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurological system regulates how our bodies function; language determines how we interface and communicate with other people; and, our programming determines the kinds of models of the world we create. Neuro-Linguistic Programming describes the fundamental dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their interplay affects our body and behavior (programming).
Neuro-linguistic Programming is an epistemology; addressing the many levels involved in being human. NLP is a multi-dimensional process that involves the development of behavioral competence and flexibility, and it also involves strategic thinking and an understanding of the mental and cognitive processes behind behavior. NLP provides tools and skills for the development of states of behavioral competence and flexibility, and also involves strategic thinking and an understanding of the mental and cognitive processes behind behavior. NLP provides tools and skills for the development of states of individual excellence, while establishing a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions about what human beings are, what communication is, and what the process of change is all about...
For you, learning about NLP may be about self-discovery, exploring your identity and personal mission life, because it provides a framework for understanding and relating to the transpersonal part of the human experience. Transpersonal is a qualitative expression which attempts to label that reaches beyond our individual ego boundaries, our communities and all global systems.
